<\/iframe><\/p>\nAfter you finish watching this video, try solving a similar F-M ratio math problem on your own.\u00a0 The practice exams at the following link contain a few F-M ratio math problems: <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2JrmNQE\">click here for the practice exams<\/a>.\u00a0 Or, you have the option of taking this online course:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/water-and-wastewater-courses.teachable.com\/\"> click here for the online course.\u00a0<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n<h2>What is an F-M ratio?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\nSimply put, the F-M ratio is a measure of the amount of food, or BOD, that is given to the microorganisms in the aeration tank.\u00a0 The microorganisms are the mixed liquor volatile suspended solids, or MLVSS.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n<h2>Here\u2019s the formula to calculate the food-to-microorganism ratio:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\nF-M ratio = lbs\/day of food (BOD) \/ lbs of MLVSS<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\nThe answer will be in the following units:<\/span><\/p>\nlbs\/day BOD \/ lbs of MLVSS<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\nThe top of the formula represents the amount of BOD going into the aeration.\u00a0 This is also called the primary effluent.\u00a0 The bottom of the formula is the amount of microorganisms inside the aeration tank that will consume the incoming BOD.\u00a0 The F-M ratio determines how much lbs\/day of BOD is available for each lb of microorganism in the aeration tank.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\nOn exams, you may be given the BOD in mg\/L and the incoming flowrate in MGD.\u00a0 In this case, you\u2019ll use the lbs\/day formula to calculate the BOD in lbs\/day.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\nMake sure to understand the difference between MLSS and MLVSS. MLSS is mixed liquor suspended solids, which are the suspended solids in the aeration tank. They include both organics and inorganics. On the other hand, MLVSS is the volatile portion, which are essentially the microorganisms.
